The Ins and Outs of Potting and Repotting Orchids

The first thing to know about potting or repotting Ground or Phalaenopsis Orchids is why you need to do it.  There are only two viable reasons that anyone should ever pot or repot an orchid of any kind.  The first reason would be that the plant has out grown the pot that it is in.  The second reason to repot an orchid is if the soil or moss the orchid is planted in has decomposed or lost its nutrients and value for the plant.  In either situation, the plant needs to be securely repotted. But how do you do that you may ask.  Below you will find a step by step outline of what to do to repot your Ground or Phalaenopsis Orchids.

STEPS TO REPOTTING ORCHIDS
1.       Secure yourself a new larger pot.
2.       Secure yourself a new media or covering for your orchids- moss or stones are the best suggestions
3.       Carefully grasp the orchid plant as close to the media as possible.
4.       Gently pull the orchid from its original container and set it on newspaper to let the media fall off.
5.       Inspect the roots-clip any dead or decaying roots off the plant
6.       Center the plant in the new container and fill with your new media
7.       Water your plant- after the trauma of being repotted the plant will need a drink. Besides the new media will be dry and the plant needs moisture to grow and to adapt to its new environment.
8.       Place the plant back wherever you had it and watch your efforts grow and flourish

In conclusion, repotting a growing Orchid is not difficult to do. Actually, quite the opposite.
